grad research

school has been going great. in our perl class, we soon will be finishing the lessons on perl programming and dive into a research for the rest of the semester. i can basically do anything internet related research using perl. one of my ideas my professor liked is trying to research what kind of blog entries on personal blogs attract comments. for this, i will need quite some data to work with. i emailed livejournal if they’d give me a stats of the top 500 most commented entries. it seems they don’t have that available and is unwilling to provide any help *shurg* i guess i will just have to build my own survey for all people who own a personal blog :)

something pretty interesting i learned today from my professor. of course you might already know this. i’ve just been doing something quite dumb this whole time.

new b2 hack: auto copy

This hack will allow your b2 to automatically copy the content of your new or edited b2 entry into your computer clipboard. This means if you accidentally close your browser or anything happens to your b2 after you hit the “Blog This!” or “Edit This!” buttons, your lastest entry will be saved in your clipboard. If you simply do a paste to any text editor, you will have the information again.

For tabulas users, you should know this function well at tabulas. I just make it so b2 also has it :) GRAB IT HERE!

pixeling

pixeling, doll making seems to be the trend lately. i’ve been obsessed with pixeling myself. esp. after i found out about foody. i’ve been pixeling foody. so far i’ve done
foodyfoody avatar for laurynfooling: foody's girlfriend
tonite i made another foody pixel and incorporated it with my tabulas’s new (sorta) layout. i’m also auctioning a new pixel avatar at dmb. wee.. now if you want to get addicted too.. check out this awesome avatar place, you can also try this korean avatar site (click on avatar on upper right) and even better, if you feel extremely patient, you can even create your very own pixel city!! i’ve created two dolls at pika pika. one for me and one for andy. i’m not showing them yet coz i want andy to make two for both of us too. and i want to see how similiar or dissimiliar they will be *hehe* after all these, my favorite place for doll making is still etang. thus i added a few new dolls here, here and here.

full css sites

personally i’m fastinated by these pure css websites. i believe that’s the direction i want to go for my own designing.

her paintings are pretty impressive. i love traditional chinese paintings! and her name is quite similiar to mine (in english).. and she’s born in shanghai too wow. after i watched her movie, i admire her even more. she isn’t only an incredible artist, she also has a beautiful mind. being able to stand up for what she believed… simply amazing..

a new theme foody has been released :)

what's up with the fees?

this is really pissing me off. did i ever pay attention or does it seem only starting this year UI started to charge ridiculous fees like:
Computer Fee $94.00
Student Activities Fee $19.50
Student Services Fee $25.50
Student Union Fee $42.50
Building Fee $59.50
Student Health Fees $84.50

the first four are supported by this and the last one is even better. What does my “health fee” pay for?

i don’t use any of these services except computers. what makes them mandatory?! i mean doesn’t it make more sense that if you only pay for health care fees when you GET SICK? wtf….arg

oh yea, this is really gross How many sexual partners have you had? – 11 or more 16% *puke*

airport adventure

as you see in my daily grind, I had to take my dad to the airport this morning. my dad told me to arrive at his place by 8am. so i left my house at 7:30am. after we arrived at the airport, the things became more complicated than ever. altho i insisted on parking my car right after he unloaded the luggages, he forced me to leave the car outside unmonitored to help him check in. i don’t know what was the grand idea but Northwest airline recently implemented touch screen check in system. instead of having the assistants serve you directly, they are now to give you a lengthy confusing tutorial on how to use their touch screen. the software was poorly designed and the assistants were plain rude. my dad didn’t want to deal with the whole thing and he demanded me learning the process and do it for him. how many of you know where to find your passport number?

they first asked you for a credit card. well my dad didn’t carry one (why would he anyway since he’s going back to china?!) and so the assistant said touch the two lines of text at the bottom. i did as she told but she gave me a dirty look for touching the wrong spot. as it turned out, there are three different spots on the two lines of tiny texts where you can touch. there was no indications of where to touch tho. it’s like a poorly designed webpage where hyperlines and texts look exactly the same. how the hell was i supposed to know where to touch. after a lengthy form filling process, i obtained his passes. meanwhile they found that both of my dad’s luggages were OVER WEIGHT. they said it will cost 200-300 dollars if we wish to leave them as they were. while my dad was digging through his luggages to take things out, i saw a police man walking toward my car. so i ran to park my car before i got a ticket. thank god i was quick. by the time i returned, my dad was stuffing his carry on bag with some instant coffee bottles. i was like what you need those for? don’t they sell that in Shanghai? he replied: well they are after all american products. LMAO.. the cheapest, nastiest american products are soooooo precious to him. he probably paid about $1 for each of the generic instant coffee. he was close paying a $300 fine for them. GOSH… i really DON’T understand the way he thinks. *falls over* both of his luggages were opened by the earnest looking security workers and were thoroughly checked. LMAO.. i wonder what THEY THINK he’d carry. more cheapo american products i suppose. hahahahah that’s just too funny. after everything was taken care of and he finally went into the passenger waiting room, i was long ready to leave the airport. but of course it must be my unlucky day. only because i took time to take this picture, i missed the 20 minutes free parking and ended up paying $1.50 for a 22 minutes parking. damn damn damn.. on top of all these, i had to drive 20 minutes on the freeway under heavy rain. i was very happy when i got home!

of course i must also plug my tabulas fanlisting!

grad school appointment

i talked to my teacher for perl and visual basic about me going to grad school today. he’s really nice and has given me many pointers to fields that might interest me. he said i don’t necessarily have to get a Ph.D in computer science. if i’m interested in human computer interaction, search engines, i should consider going to the business school here in UI, get a Ph.D in MIS because the MIS study here is very technical orietated. he even gave me a research journal to read. he said it’s the journal we in the perl programming class will later discuss but since i am always two steps ahead, he will let me read it now. LOL i don’t know why i give him that impression. yesterday he was teasing me in the class. while he was teaching with his labtop on the overhead, he browsed to a certain place on his hard drive and said “i want to show you something weird. since the beginning of the semester, Ying has sent me a thousand emails and i actually gave her her own folder.” there he showed a folder name “Ying Zhang” with some of the files i sent him. OMG LOL.. i was embarrassed but it was funny. everyone laughed. i guess if i do apply for the business school here and end up working with him, it won’t be too bad XP
