wallpaper

i made a wallpaper last nite for our anniversary. i don’t think it’s very good. but i tried. i was having a bit of layout block.. eek. that’s terrible at this special time of the year.

i’m sick. my throat hurts :( and the lecture rooms and the computer lab are cold as ice :( i need to go home and do my Calc III homework.

anniversary

andy and i’s two year anniversary is coming up. i already bought him a gift.. now i need to work on a card and something sweet for him. i wanted to make a card and print it out with the color printer. i want to make a cute image with a teddybear and a kitty. the teddybear is him and the kitty is me.. where can i find some images? please help!!!

this year is different from the last one. again we’ve been thru A LOT and our love is ever stronger. but we are no longer new lovers this year. we show our romance in a different way now. our love has been our power. a power that helped us to move out completely, to pay our bills without fiancial aid, to perform well in our schools and to live happily. many people with our ages are still searching for a goal for their lives but we’ve already started working toward our goal for one entire year. we have never lacked off. i love this feeling.

and i do want to share this feeling with andy when our special day comes ;)

crazy things of the day

my friend paul told me he’s graduating this year with THREE degrees and ONE minor. His GPA right now is 3.90 (it will probably get higher, he’s still working on his A pluses this year). he did all those in FOUR FREAKING YEARS. how in the world could someone do that? he will get BS degrees in Computer Science and Math; an English degree and a philosophy minor. He makes everyone look so short around him. gosh i hate him with a passion. i guess genuises are genuises. you’d better bow down in front of them. sigh…..

gaile just told me another crazy thing. do you know her hair is 4 and half feet long? She said she dyed them with 3 boxes.

*FAINT* *FAINT* *FAINT* *FAINT* *FAINT* *FAINT*

stupid dream

i woke up whispering this morning. when i opened my eyes, i saw andy staring at me. he asked me what i was saying. then i remembered my whole dream. i don’t ususally remember my dream so clear but this time…

andy and I were in Shanghai, China. it was a night and we decided that we wanted to sing karaoke and have some dinner out. andy called a taxi and for some reason the previous passenager had to pay andy money. i went over and saw andy accepted a chinese check. i was so pissed. i asked andy why would he accept a chinese check. it wasn’t like his american bank would cash it. plus 9 out of 10 times the checks are fake. then we got on the taxi. the taxi had no driver. the driver controlled the car with a remote. first i thought that kind taxi must cost a lot more than the normal ones but the driver ended up giving us a huge discount. it only cost 10 rmb.

when we arrived at this karaoke place, it just opened. we went inside. there were at least 30 people there already. i was amazed. i was expecting much less people so i could actually sing. when the songs started, it was nothing like the normal karaoke.. it was like a contest of some sort.. you get random parts of four different songs.. and you had to try to sing them. it was a show off of how many different songs you kenw. it was completely outrangous. i started feeling i shouldn’t be there at all. so i took andy and walked out of the room. a lady stopped me asked me to pay the bill. it was 21 rmb. i thought i saw a 8 rmb per person sign outside of the window, so i questioned what was the extra money for. and the lady said it was for the songs and food. i cried out i didn’t even sing a song and neither did i have any food. she insisted that was coz i didn’t want to stay. they would serve the food and i would be able to sing the song if i stayed. i said i wasn’t gonna stay so i shouldn’t have to pay. that lady won’t let me leave and threaten calling the police on me if i didn’t pay. i was like: go ahead and call the police, did i sign something entering this place to pay for service that i didn’t receive? since andy couldn’t understand a word of chinese, he stood next to me and asked what was going on. that’s when i told him “those bastards are trying to rob us blind” - the same sentence i whispered when i woke up.

stupid dream made me waking up mad. i wanted to punch that lady in the face.

Julia’s Honeymoon

as some of you know, my god sister got married last week. she and her husband went on their honeymoon. she called me yesterday and told me she’s back. her honeymoon was a little more tiresome than expected coz they went with SIX other people. These six people are not their age group. They are her dad, stepmom, aunts and uncles sorta people. andy and i were laughing our heads off. i thought honeymoon is supposed to be two people? they drove to Las Vagas in a rented RV. i couldn’t believe there are actually RV parking lots there. and she said: sure there are, $18/night, not too bad at all. except we couldn’t fit 8 people in the RV so most of us had to sleep in the hotels anyway. and the weather was unbelievably hot.

i was listening with my jaw dropped to my chin. what an amazing honeymoon! *grin* and they saw Michael Jackson in Vagas shopping too.

you ask why?

I talked to the people today and the class Modern China i took last semester didn’t fulfill Historical Perspectives for GE but only fulfills Foreign Civilization and Culture. Let’s evaluate the validity for this.

Here are the definitions for the requirements published.

Historical Perspectives -
Courses in this area help students understand a period of the past in
its own terms, comprehend the historical processes of change and
continuity, sharpen their analytical skills in the evalution of
evidence, and develop their ability to generalize, explain, and
interpret historical change.

Foreign Civilzation and Culture -
Courses in this area promote better understanding among students of
their own culture through comparative analysis with others; provide
students with some knowledge about one or more foreign civilizations,
cultures, and societies; and foster international and intercultural
understanding.

Here are the course descriptions for the two classes for Chinese history. The first one doesn’t fulfill Historical Perspectives but only Foreign Civilzation and Culture (the one I took), the second one fulfills both.

Modern China 1600s to 1920s

- This survey of modern Chinese history begins with the decline of the Ming dynasty and the conquest of China by Manchus in the 1600s, followed by the glorious years of the Qing (Manchu) dynasty in the 1700s. In the 1800s, social problems brought huge internal rebellions. Western encroachments weakened China further, ending the dynasty in 1912. The new government of the Republic of China was accompanied by efforts to create a new culture and by new political parties. The course ends with the rise to power of the Nationalist Party and its bloody split with the Communists in the 1920s. Readings include translations of original sources. No previous knowledge of China is necessary. The instructor is Arkush.

Civilizations of Asia: China

- This course provides an introductory survey of Chinese history and civilization from its origins to the present day. Students explore Confucian philosophy, Buddhism and Daoism, art and literature, the writing system and calligraphy, the imperial political system, family and women, foreign encroachments, 20th-century revolutions, and Chinese society today. Readings include history, fiction translated from Chinese, and biography. No previous knowledge of China (or of Chinese) is required. Although the primary class format is lecture, students work on writing and discussion skills. The instructor is Arkush.

I’ve already emailed the intrustor for some insights about this decision. I also plan to write to the Reviewers to get the first class to fulfill Historical Perspectives.

ARRG!

i gave them pictures of me and andy. there’s a new surprise picture that’s actually NOT in here!! curious?

we did a bit of moving around today. i got the book shelf from holding junks to actually hold books. hehe.. we got it filled fast. i can’t believe i actually have a total of 16 of my favorite author’s books. cool.. now i can read them all over again ;) actually i’ve been reading the book about her trip back to beijing in 1988. she gave insights about this Zhang Bao Sheng person who could do the impossible. her real personal experience with him went like this:

*please excuse my translation*

my sister-in-law’s friend Yang Jie had tried to invite the “Magic” Zhang over many times but he could never seem to keep his promise. many people have already given me insights about his “magic”. he could burn things with his fires and make the cars on the street stop. one time, a man didn’t believe what he did in front of his viewers, he put a coin inside of that man’s stomach. when the man went to the hospital and saw the coin through x-ray, he was terrified. the man went back to Zhang begged Zhang to get the coin out of his stomach. And Zhang did it without much difficulty.

The most interesting part was no one could tell exactly how he did his “magic”. It could be no magic at all. Never was there an explanation. He was protected by the government as a national treasure. In China, in 1988, owning a personal car was rare enough. “Magic” Zhang didn’t just have a personal car, he owned a police car. If he had to go somewhere fast, he could put on the lights and enjoy many unbelievable privileges.

When Zhang finally showed up at my door step, there were already a group of people waiting for his appearance. The only reason he came was because his wife loved my books. I prepared signed books for his wife. He walked in the room and sat on the chair and looked ernest. As a general, he demanded Yang Jie

“Take off your clothes!”

I’ve never seen Yang Jie as worried and uncomfortable as the way she was. She couldn’t decide what to do and looked around for help. Finally my husband went to his room and took one of his brand new white shirts and said to Zhang

“Just use mine. It’s brand new.”

“Magic” Zhang wasn’t very happy but he took the white shirt and held in his hand. Immediately, smoke came out. Within a minute, the shirt was on fire. He threw the burning shirt onto the floor. Everyone started trying their best putting out the fire. Again Zhang demanded

“Yang Jie, your shirt!”

Yang Jie didn’t hestitate this time. She went to my room and took of her shirt and put on one of mine. My shirt looked so tiny on her. She looked very odd when she came out of the room. Everyone wanted to laugh but no one dared to since “Magic” Zhang didn’t laugh. Zhang burnt Yang Jie’s shirt just as easily. Next he cried out

“Name card!”

Right a way, many people offered him name cards. He picked my brother-in-law’s and demanded him to fold the name card up as tiny as possible and then chew on it. My brother-in-law did it without a complaint. Minutes later, he asked my brother-in-law to spit the grounded paper out. Zhang held the paper in his hand and said

“There is still more in your mouth!”

My brother-in-law first used his figers scrabbing his mouth for leftover paper. When Zhang said there were even more, he used a tooth pick. Finally Zhang had all the paper. He kept playing with it with his hand. I stared at his hand. I could only see the letters on the name card gradually returned their legibility. The paper gradually became less grounded. At last the entire name card returned to its originality. The name card was past around to be checked. No one could tell that it had been chewed before. Everyone clapped. But Zhang waved his hand and acted like the act was nothing to him.

It seemed my sister-in-law was expecting his visit for a long time; she was well prepared. She took out a brand new bottle of pills and asked

“I heard you could make the pills fall out of a bottle without opening it?!”

Zhang took the bottle and opened up the lid. My smart sister-in-law chose one with the cork still intact. Zhang shaked his head and asked me and my hushand to write two words on two slips of paper in secret. We did that as quickly and as concealed as possible. We folded the paper slips and handed them to Zhang. Zhang first held my hushand’s and stared at the ceiling for a while. Then he wrote out the word my husband wrote almost in my husband’s exact handwriting.

Zhang turned around and lifted the bottle of pills. The pills started falling off from the bottle. They spread all over the room. We held falling the pills with our hands and checked the bottom of the bottle with our eyes. We could find no opening on the bottom of the bottle. After he emptied out the pills, he turned the bottle over and put it under my eyes. I touched the bottom with my hands. The bottle was made of glass; nothing of the bottle had been disturbed. Zhang said

“Your paper slip is in there and it said ‘double’ on it!”

My eyes widened. Yes, my well folded paper slip was inside.

Not too busy but i will be preparing andy’s lunch box every nite since he will spend everyday at a different city for school and almost every nite at kfc working. i’ll be responsible for his meal. i will take this responsibility seriously.

i purchased my textbooks today. I spent $300. that doesn’t even include a textbook for my Algorithm class which I will borrow from my friend Paul. Does it suck or what?

anyway, i’m keeping my distance from the net. i’m not getting on the net much at nite. and if I do, i make sure i get off before 10pm. why? i just want to spend more time cooking, exercising and spending time with andy :) hope you don’t mind.

i’m BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just you know i’m back *hehe* i’m working on the pictures =) there are so many of them, it will take a while. my flight was terribly long. but at least i didn’t have to spend an extra nite anywhere this time.

andy was too happy to see me and me too. we spent the day together yesterday. i’m back at work today. i will be on aim =) see you all around!

PS. we got our VERY OWN apartment and andy had made it SOOO PRETTY. kiss kiss =)
