the modern china class

i was reading “The Search for Modern China” by Jonathan D. Spence. I’m quite impressed by the amount of insights about china this book gives. i took this class hoping to see how american sees china historically. i end up finding myself so much engaged to all the info i’m actually learning. we are assigned to read the first two chapters by monday. reading has never been my favorite so is history, but this book attracts me. i dont know why. it’s the story about my own country; a tale created by my ancestors. i’ve of coursed heard of Li Zicheng, Manchus before but i never knew the significance of them until today. i finished the chapters already and are now looking through all the photos and artworks. if you have a chinese background or wish to know about china since Qing dynasty to present, i highly recommend this book. it’s cheap too. 1000 pages paperback for only $20 at amazon. I bought it for $30 at my local bookstore. I certainly it’s much worthwhile than most of my other textbooks.

i just figured how terrible this semester will be. the classes i’m taking demand lots of hard work. i will have to read shakespares for my lit. class, grrrr, i hate that!!! i’m still working 17 hours at the lab plus my web design job. i just got a call from a business in california saying they are interested in ordering some layouts from me. it’s refered by the guy who i did some logos for. it sounds like a nice job except they didn’t sound like they knew what they needed. i also want to cook more at home. i want to manage our diet better at home this year. i will be VERY VERY busy. which means much less time for online community >< how sad. but i will still try my best. so you probably won’t see me online as often this semester. don’t be surprised.
carried away

i’m still busy working on the client’s site. yesterday i finished the search function, today i did mailing list. but i seem to be carried away sometime. i can’t believe we are gonna leave for florida this saturday. it seems so soon and yet so faraway. i wonder what would be the world like over there. hmm… i can already smell the fresh air. a whole week of vacation. wow, that sounds almost too good to be true. *blush* i will be taking lots of pictures of course. and hopefully have lots of fun. talking about it.. where should i go? i need to check out more places where we can visit while we are there.. does anyone know what are some good places in fort lauderdale?
been working

i’ve been working hard on my client site. that’s why i don’t do other stuff around the net a lot these days. it’s turning out well. i’m happy and my client is happy too. i’ve got my first $250 check. they will pay me the rest when i’m done.
oh i also found out that i got 4.0 this semester!! YAY!!!
ok also, i wonder how ppl write emails these days. first of all, i don’t know where these people found out my email and they always start asking questions from nowhere. today i got this:

Message:
Do you have this letter font? I couldn’t get through some of your site to look.
HUH??! does that mean s/he wants a font named “precious moments” or asking about font i’m using for my precious moments site? do you have any idea? i feel that i’m too nice to even reply to such emails =P
the day went well

yesterday was such a wonderful day. i spent most of the day working on the script for managing my client’s site. It’s mostly done!! I’m quite happy with the result, so does Laurie =) She’s gonna pay me $500 for the entire project which for some people, it’s not much but i really didn’t do this job just for the money. I will gain so much experience from it and it will be a big chunk more in my portfolio. I’m really happy that she really cares about paying me. She values my work and respect me =) Later last nite I got my very own phpdev installed on my computer. It’s GREAT!!! I had a little difficulty with getting mysql server installed on my computer. Thanks to mike from xmb for all the help. It’s now running and that means I can test my php & mysql scripts right on my own computer. No more uploading and dealing my hosting company’s mysql downtime! YAY~!!! and there is even more surprise at the end. I got a card from ANDY!!! On the front page it says “You’re all I need to be happy” and inside is a poem written by him:

my client laurie is such a nice lady. yesterday i stayed up five and fell asleep day time. when she was here to drop off a disk for me in the morning, i wasn’t even awake. so she left the disk at the door and some deserts from java house she bought me for breakfast!!! i’m so touched. she didn’t treat me just as a person who she pays to do a website for her. she treated me as a friend. i’m so happy that she actually likes me as a person too. we had a talk later during the day. i got her into aim hehe and she liked it.
i’ve been thinking about the coding of the site last nite. i had the implusion to turn on the computer and get started. but knowing i was gonna work this morning, i decided to try fall asleep. i finally did at 2 and waking up at 9:30 this morning and the first thoughts i had was about the site. i really want to do a good job on the site. so i will go ahead get started.

finals are gone!!!! no one’s at the lab today so we are closing an hour early. i’m done for today and ready to go home =) i will be putting up a new layout for new millennium. i believe i aced the discrete structure test. i didn’t do too bad on the cs test. there is a little confusion in one of the problems. the rest are pretty straight forward. hopefully i will get As in both of the classes. i asked andy if he’d like to go joggin tonite. we didn’t keep up with that due to my sickness and final week. so it’s the best time to do it now =)
i got christmas cards from daynah and ladyceres. thanks you guys!!
what’s up with yahoo mails? I’ve getting bulk mails delivered to my INBOX like 5 per minute or something. every time i check my mail, there are about 80% junk mails. i’m so irritated. hate digging thru those stupid ads!!!

i’m not feeling well. i took this cheap Nitequil medicine from HyVee yesterday and now it’s giving me side effects. i went to sleep at 9 and got up at 8 in the morning. didn’t feel like rested. actually all my muscles hurt. i feel like exhausted. man, i work 5 hours today. and have a class to go to ><
the lady who “intervewed” me was so nice. i will be redesigning her business site echirps.com. she’s already paid me $20 for just talking to her about hosting, and designing. i feel so flattered. hopefully i will be able to finally start a good project.
i don’t know if my hosting company has changed the dns of regretless or not. so far, it doesn’t look too good. i asked them. at least they moved all my data over. sigh.. they love to procrastinate.
p.s. my hosting company has successfully moved to the new server. yay!

wow, i’m surprised by my cs overall grades. i actually ranked 5th highest grade among 130 students altho i flunked the last exam. take a look. the last 4-digit of my SSN is 8605. my friend paul actually didn’t do THAT MUCH better than i did. he got 555. it makes me feel better coz i always thought he’s a genius. who are the other two who got higher than him? jeez! those ppl kick.
daynah is bugging me to add more to my wishlist.. i wonder why. i will try but there is really not much i want on amazon. i wish i can make a wishlist elsewhere too. like some chinese products =P

i’m so proud of myself. today is the first day i ever finished my cs project at home, not at the unix lab. why am i so proud? i really don’t know. maybe coz it’s the first.. and i have to telnet to the server to compile my program. it actually isn’t a tough project. i finished in four hours. i will have more time to work on DMB zine now. katherine sent me the photo theme for the board. it looks nice. but i can’t get it up til tomorrow. stay tune. now i need to go to bed =)
