what's up with the fees?

this is really pissing me off. did i ever pay attention or does it seem only starting this year UI started to charge ridiculous fees like:
Computer Fee $94.00
Student Activities Fee $19.50
Student Services Fee $25.50
Student Union Fee $42.50
Building Fee $59.50
Student Health Fees $84.50

the first four are supported by this and the last one is even better. What does my “health fee” pay for?

i don’t use any of these services except computers. what makes them mandatory?! i mean doesn’t it make more sense that if you only pay for health care fees when you GET SICK? wtf….arg

oh yea, this is really gross How many sexual partners have you had? – 11 or more 16% *puke*

grad school appointment

i talked to my teacher for perl and visual basic about me going to grad school today. he’s really nice and has given me many pointers to fields that might interest me. he said i don’t necessarily have to get a Ph.D in computer science. if i’m interested in human computer interaction, search engines, i should consider going to the business school here in UI, get a Ph.D in MIS because the MIS study here is very technical orietated. he even gave me a research journal to read. he said it’s the journal we in the perl programming class will later discuss but since i am always two steps ahead, he will let me read it now. LOL i don’t know why i give him that impression. yesterday he was teasing me in the class. while he was teaching with his labtop on the overhead, he browsed to a certain place on his hard drive and said “i want to show you something weird. since the beginning of the semester, Ying has sent me a thousand emails and i actually gave her her own folder.” there he showed a folder name “Ying Zhang” with some of the files i sent him. OMG LOL.. i was embarrassed but it was funny. everyone laughed. i guess if i do apply for the business school here and end up working with him, it won’t be too bad XP

yummy school

i think this school year is great.. i’m taking two great classes mainly visual basic and perl.. they really really fit my need. OMG.. we are actually learning REGULAR EXPRESSIONS TODAY!! i’ve wanted to learn it for so long!! i can never dream that i can actually learn it in a class. i feel so happy altho it’s a graduate level course, it’s rather easy because it’s my interest. i’ll play with their windows ssi server see if i can write a simple blogging script in perl.

i start to reconsider the possibility of my life after i graduate.. so tomorrow i will talk to my advisor about the possibility of going to a graduate school. since i never thought about it before, i have no idea what would it be like.

The Teddy Bear Genius

Hoo boy. Now I know everyone is familiar with the bright, adept and dignified colleagues that fill the aisles at school and constitute our vast workforce . . . :cough: NOT!! It amazes me that though I’m surrounded by blithering veggies every day, one special headcase always seems to shine through with new levels of idiocracy unparalleled by his/her peers.

I was scouting out my classroom for a computer course and eventually found it, and also found my instructor was waiting for the current class to conclude. She was at a table in a small lobby area near the classroom so I sat down with her, and soon after we were joined by another classmate.

This classmate was wearing old cruddy white tennis shoes, dirty frayed blue jeans, a dusty black T-shirt and an old faded Dallas Cowboys hat. The instructor asked his name and he told her it was easy to remember his name ‘Brian’ by his Cowboys hat that he wore every day. I looked at that thing which was probably crawling with bugs and tried to parallel ‘Brian’ with that hat. Quite frankly there was nothing that stood out about the guy except his repulsive odor.

Anyway, that’s not even the stupid thing he said.

He asks the instructor: “Have you seen the virus going around that puts a teddy bear on your screen that won’t go away?”
She replies: “Yes I’ve heard of it, it is actually a hoax. Did you get it in an email?”
Him: “Yeah, my dad sent it to me, he got the same virus!” starts laughing with blank look in his eyes. Small period of uncomfortable silence.
Instructor: “Well when you get those e-mails you probably shouldn’t open them.”
Him: “No matter how many times I clicked on the teddy bear he would not go away! I finally had to go to the Norton Anti-Virus web page so it could get rid of it!” Laughs heartily, and starts looking to the instructor for approval as if he was proud of his accomplishment. This was not even a REAL virus.

The instructor and I then share one of those uncomfortable moments of realization eye-contact that just communicated ‘Oh my god this guy is a complete chimp’ She then says, “Well time to go to the class room!” and departs before her sanity is completely broken. I just sat there and could not believe what I had just heard.

evil andy

haha, surprise surprise… in my entire boring first day of the school, andy’s email is definitely one of the most amusing things happened. hehe.. i can’t believe i will start getting his emails again. that makes me excited LOL from andy:

This two hour time between classes sucks! At least there is a computer lab nearby my noon class. I have no excuse not to write emails and posts now :sniff: It’s cold in here too and there’s this 900lb girl looking at the internet and wiggling around and stuff. Oh yeah, she’s the LAB MONITOR! I should sit at the far end of the row of computers farthest away from the desk and say, “Hey my computer just crashed and I lost all of my files!” and when she waddles over there, squeezing between chairs, say, “oh nevermind its cool now!”

for the ENTIRE summer he’s been hot and has been making fun of how i’m always cold in the computer lab. he finally admitted he’s COLD. HAHA!

[geek talk]i think i actually like my programming language concept class. i mean the whole concept is very new. what all i’ve been learning so far are imperative and object orientated programming languages. now we are gonna talk about logical and functional languages like prolog and haskell. i think it sounds rather interesting. i want to see how they are done.[/geek talk]

i went to the visual basic class. i know it’s going to be rather boring for me BUT i really LOVE to learn about visual basic .NET framework so i can write programs like google toolbar hehe.. that’d be very cool :)

back to school?

when does everyone goes back to school.. are there newbies for college ;)

school starts next monday for me, i am taking easy courses this semster:
civilization of asian: china
programming language concept (i heard it sucks tho XP oh well it’s required for cs, we will see)
programming with C
tentative: web programming (Visual Basic scripting web based)

i don’t know if the last one is worth paying for. i guess i have two weeks before i decide whether i want to drop it.

how productive was your summer?

judging from what i’ve accomplished for the summer, i’m quite satisfied :) look at this post from 3 months ago. i gave myself a huge list of things i needed to do for the summer. and guess what? i finished most of them. WOW i’m so proud. let’s do a list check

- put the free trial for advertising back, maybe make it one day only
DONE!
- make a new layout for regretless.com that actually incorporates the ad banner
DONE! – altho i want a new one now :(
- offer banner exchange service at dnw
DONE!
- offer simple counter service at dnw
NO – but don’t know if it’s necessary any more
- REDO the bookmarks for dnw. i need a much better script for that.
DONE! – well i got rid of it and replaced i with “plug yourself” XP
- UPDATE asian abuse to make it more useful (i need to add LOTS of info about how to handle abuse etc. so people can stop giving me crap!! arg, this has been bugging me so bad)
DONE!
- do something about dmb!! it’s dying…
DONE! – it’s alive again *hehe* and i had to close registration
- i want to write two hacks for b2: one is something that lists the commenters from your last blog entry in your post area for easy plugging. i think people will like this one since it’s like a trend now to plug commenters. two is a threaded commenting system like livejournal. this hack is gonna be a tough one. don’t know if i will have time to get to it.
BOTH ARE DONE! and are popular hacks *hehe*
- update DNW with more tutorials and also list all the tutorials by their descriptions etc. i think that site is very confusing. yuck.
DONE!
- i have this idea of a theme for pure essence that i want to implement.
HRM – i don’t remember what my idea was but i did add a couple of new themes :)

and on top of all that i made around $2000 for my tuition this summer. i am happy :)

OMG OMG OMG OMG VERONICA FINALLY GOT THE HUGE CAREBEAR I SENT HER :) LOOK!!! i’m so happy!!

WOOHOO

woohoo!! i just finished a $700 project!! it was writing a complete shopping cart system (admin included of course) for a website. thanks to kasper for giving me this opportunity! i am so happy. it took me a total of 6 hours (i think) coz i’ve done something very similiar for echirps before. i just borrowed much of the code :) i’m glad i did a good job coding it the first time so when i borrowed the code, it made everything so much easier. i’m sooooo happy!! woohoo…

job babble

my work schedule for the next five weeks is 8-6 monday – wednesday. I chose those hours because i get paid for half an hour extra for opening and closing the lab. this means i get a total of 33 hours for working just three days of a week. that sounds too good, doesn’t it? i thought so too. but now i start to wonder whether it was a good idea. basically it’s getting harder and harder to keep myself awake during work. i think it would be easier if i were to get up at 7:30 everyday. now i sleep in from thursday – sunday and trying to be on schedule for the next monday is hard.. i probably have a nite gene. another thing i don’t like about the schedule is that i get home the same time andy does, that leaves me very little time to prepare for dinner. i still want to cook but i need more time. esp. when i want to martinate the meat and whatnot. oh well i think i have too much complaint about a lazyass job.
